The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.
Has everyone who expected to get a physical copy of this gotten theirs? 2016 was the only year I was in 10C but I'll be surprised if I actually receive one. And because I'm no longer a member I don't have access to the "download" section on the site. Cool fan club.
So, mine was on my doorstep this morning. I rescind my pessimism. The magazine is actually kinda neat. Cool fan club!
Finally listened to "Around And Around". While not bad, everyone playing is doing a fine job playing their instruments, it's the sound I don't like. I guess this has been going on for awhile now, at least the way I hear it, but it just sounds so sterile. To me, it's as if they record in a sterile operating room or something. That cozy warmth and loose groove sound I love so much is just gone. I don't know how to quite articulate it, but I think one of my biggest problems with "new" Pearl Jam (outside of writing songs I don't like) is the sound. It's lifeless (at least to these ears).

Its also kind of a lifeless song to begin with in my opinion.

I think "suffocating" and "neutered" would be a good way to describe much of their recorded sound post-Riot.
And, you're right, that Stones version does sound better. There's a looseness to it that sounds much more natural.
Alive was pretty interesting. I mean I heard it when the HOF was on HBO, but paying a bit more attention it's so interesting to hear it "slow" again. The use of the highhat at the beginning rather that the ride is a big difference. Slowing it down also makes me appreciate the drum fills more; they are standing out more. Listening around the 2:30 mark, that groove PJ has and can use if they want, makes a comeback. The solo is really nice too, Mike sounds good overtop the groove Jeff / Stone / Dave are in. Towards the last minute it feels like the song is speeding up to more modern levels and Dave can't quite keep up like Matt can, but damn, Mr. Krusen is doing a really good job. Ed sound good too.
