Rogue One should feel more like Star Wars. It's steeped in the iconography (more deliberately than TFA), it is directly part of the OT storyline, and the narratives within it are all conventional within the series (other than the deaths of all the characters at the end, which, granted, is no small thing).

Last Jedi is a bit of a pivot away from what classical Star Wars is. If it felt like a conventional Star Wars movie it wouldn't be doing its job. It just needs to feel enough like a Star Wars movie to carry you along for the transition.

I'm starting page 25 of 'shit I've written about Star Wars today' and I'm not even halfway through this stupid movie. I'm glad at least something was useful to someone :)

My brother and I and a friend used to play the West End Games version of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game. Rogue One felt like one of our RPG games. It was really cool.

that's a good call. Plus they're all largely very RPG's characters :)

Oh definitely. And from time to time the characters would meet Han or Luke, etc. just before they were going off on a mission. Just enough to meet the heroes of the rebellion type thing.

I had that source book. I just had no friends to play it with so would imagine it all.
Rogue one does feel like it but in an earned and honest way. Not a forced convoluted way.

Feel like I’ve asked this before but Nit picky Rogue One question.
When Jyn is brought in front of Mon Mothma she’s told an imperial pilot has defected in Jeddha and says he has information from Galen Erso about a new super weapon.

But we don’t see Saw extract that info from Bodie until two scenes later...

What am I missing?

I watched this again on an airplane. I still really like it but it sure does have its share of "wait uhh what's going on here?" moments in the middle

Really does. And like TLJ I think we give it a pass cos when it’s awesome and doing Star Wars, it’s really really great Star Wars.

I know that but in the meeting they tell Jyn there’s a defected pilot on jeddha saying it. It’s just an editing / story snafu maybe. Even Tarkin seems to know. ‘you’ve lost a talkative pilot on jeddha’ or something to that effect

Just watched again for the first time in a while. The characters remain thin and the plotting awkward. Some scenes don’t work. But the ariel combat is thrilling and I forgot how amazing the star destroyer ram sequence is

A very fun movie with some very real flaws.

Rogue One is still probably the best Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back, though.

The weaker characters are a bit of stumbling block for me(performances are good). Bodhi is probably the most compelling. Baze is one step removed from one of the b-characters in predator. I have come around to the idea that you don't have to be a jedi to be a force user, but CHirrut lays it on too thick. Jyn swings around to supporting the rebellion a bit too quickly (i feel like she needed one more scene to help her process her grief about her father as well as the fact that the Rebellion ordered his death).

I also kind of dislike the entire Jeddah stuff with Saw.

There are lots of little moments too that I don't care for. Easy enough to overlook (and again, I do like R1 quite a bit) but it just takes the movie a bit too long to gain steam (which means there isn't the momentum I would like for there to be to carry me through those sequences) and I find the only characters I end up being genuinely invested in are Bodhi's the idea of the alliance

I actually feel more invested in Jyn’s story in this film, than I do with Rey in TFA. I think they do a good job of building her up, and Felicity Jones has all the charisma to make it special.

Her switch from unwilling street urchin to rebel leader is faaaaaar too abrupt.

Stips right. It needed at least one more scene to develop that.
