These tweets are ugly, cruel, and revealing of a character that should appeal to no one...but they also mean nothing. They result in nothing. They are side stories...I feel that's being generous...and yet they get at least as much attention as the actual policy decisions that the same character traits make possible.

In other words, the policy is both exponentially more important than and also equally capable of revealing personality traits as the tweets.

I disagree. They're as much a part of the story of his shitshow presidency as anything else. And they are his words, directly from his brain. There's value in that.

This net neutrality issue could be precarious for the Republicans, I would think, especially if companies are upfront about why consumers are encountering difficulties. I'd bet there's a lot of people in the country who don't give a shit about public policy that would be ready to go to war if their Netflix was crashing.

Can you imagine a world where you need a special package to access adult content? Torches and pitchforks my friend.

I definitely have to learn more about this and then take some time to think about it, but my gut reaction is that these companies want to make money and enraging customers is generally not the best way to do that. I'd expect less overt tactics than, "you can't use our service to look at porn" or "you have pay us an additional $4/month if you want porn or Netflix." That just seems like bad business.

But I haven't really thought this out, and I'm not defending this FCC action. That's just my initial reaction to those two posts.

This net neutrality thing is really worrying. All my pals in the US are usually all really clued in and active about stuff like this yet I’m seeing nothing on my social media timelines either from them or generally anyone. I’d have thought there’d be huge outcry and moves against this happening and I’m barely seeing anything on twitter or fb about it.

What’s going on yank pals?

I hear and understand your perspective, but also hope that you will reflect on the impact of tweets versus, say, disaster response in Puerto Rico, because you are

I understand where you're coming from. It's one of the reasons I try to avoid talk about his tweets as much as possible in my classroom. But what presidents say matters. They set a tone for discussion that is echoed throughout the nation for better or for worse. In his tweets Trump continues legitimize conspiracies and racism and show us just how staggeringly narcissistic he is. He leaves absolutely no doubt that every single thing he does in his entire life is done with one thing in mind: himself. He puts his ignorance on display and shows he doesn't understand basic concepts like trade and conflates things like debt and deficit. He rationalizes away Ray Moore and White Nationalists but comes after Steph Curry like a petulant child. I could go on, but I don't need to, you already know all this. But these tweets, or comments when they come out of his mouth instead of in tweet form, embolden and legitimize people who feel similarly, and that matters.

As for policy, that matters, too obviously. But I think a lot of words have been spilled on his disgraceful Puerto Rico response, his travel bans, who he surrounds himself with, his Obamacare-crippling executive orders, etc. It all matters.

It mattered when Obama finally stated openly supporting LGBT rights. It mattered when Obama acknowledged that there seems to be systemic discrimination black Americans face from police and elsewhere. Neither of these were policies, but they nudged the country in a direction, and they were worthy of our critical attention, and so are the current president's statements, even when they're not directly about policy.

Everyone in the FCC killing Net Neutrality deserves a baseball bat to the head. We go from Dems trying to argue the internet should be a utility like a year ago, to now Repubs doing this insanity. They aren't even pretending to have empathy for American citizens anymore. If they don't care about us, we should make them terrified of us. More shootings at Republican baseball games, please.

that guy can't wait for the massive corporate tax cut to hit the company that he owns so that he can eat caviar twelve times a die and have even more olympic athletes on call to wipe his ass after elimination

It was a bipartisan game.

What were you all up to at 6:30AM on Thanksgiving morning? Prepping baked goods for dinner? Diagramming plays for the family football game? Frantically cleaning up because you found out your Aunt Gladys is going to pop in? Attempting to lamely clapback at someone on Twitter who was pointing out your storied history of trying to discredit minority voices as always being "ungrateful"? Sleeping like a normal human?

Well:
