I used to really dislike D'yer Maker. It clicked with me on this listen in a way it never has before, but I still greatly prefer Houses of the Holy

I've never understood the dislike for "D'yer Ma'ker" -- it's catchy as hell. "Houses of the Holy" is good but I can't help but feel it's a little outclassed on "Physical Graffiti," and certainly nowhere near as singular in their catalog as its competition here.

it (d’yer) can initially come across as an out of place genre exercise (similar to all my love). in my past visits to Zeppelin Country I was looking for something very specifc and these songs were out of place. I have no expectations this time which really helped the songs open up

Dyer Maker is a fun little ditty but it isn’t what I want from Zep when I turn to them. HotH is middle ground.

Houses for the win.

I can understand that I guess. "IV" and "Houses" were my first two Zeppelin albums so my template for what they could sound like was pretty infinite. To the contrary, my struggle was going back to "LZI" and "LZII" and appreciating them as something other than relatively ordinary blues-based classic rock.

Houses of the Holy; great song. D'yer Maker is no slough either, but it's not as good.

D'yer Maker is such a great "discovering Zeppelin in high school" song - it's pleasures are immediate.

And Bonzo's drumfills (as usual) rule.

But HOTH is the stronger song.

I first heard this song as a kid on our local classic rock station that my mom would often listen to as she would run errands all over town. I’ve always been a fan. Easy vote for me.

DM is fucking wonderful. I love it. HOTH is good but it's not in the same league. Easy vote.

Imagine my surprise when, somewhere in my mid 20s, I learned that "D'yer Maker" was a casual way to say "Did you make her?" Which sounds nothing like the "die-er maker" title the jabronis north of Boston were using about during my teens.

I thought it was a way of saying "Jamaica?"

I had not heard this but I am open to it. Either way those Sicilian knuckleheads that used to casually call me a fag were way off base on this one.

Dyer Maker is still good, it has a weird reggae groove to it unlike anything else they ever did. I also didn’t realize this was their actual single for Houses of the Holy in the US, since that entire album still dominates classic rock stations.

I always thought it sounded like they sped his vox up a bit on this one.

Just listen to the guitar solo in Heartbreaker, there's nothing ordinary there. It still sounds fresh and innovative to me some nearly 50 years later.
