Getting more and more into these guys. Gaucho and Aja are the clear masterpieces, but Pretzel Logic really gets me going. Barrytown might be an early favorite of mine. Maybe it's just this cold front, or that album cover, but that track has a really nice fall feel to me.

I agree about Aja and Gaucho, but I actually enjoy the other albums a lot more. Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied and Countdown to Ecstasy is one of the best runs of albums by any band ever. I’m really getting in The Royal Scam more lately. That little lurking sax part in the verses of Everyone’s Gone to the Movies is one of the most brilliant pieces of production ever.

I think Katy Lied is a mixed bag. The highs are some of their best ever(movies, doctor wu) but some of it is meh. not a consistant album.
Oh man. I couldn’t disagree more. I think it is probably their most consistent album. There’s not a single song on it that I don’t like. And I can’t even say that about Aja. Pretzel logic is pretty close, too.

It settles into a groove so quickly that you don't notice right away that it's mocking you. Once you're in on the joke, it's so easy on the ears that you don't really care.
I get the feeling these guys played fast and loose with who their audience perceived them to be.

Welp, our chances to ever see Steely Dan are pretty much swirling down the shitter. Fagen and Becker’s estate are now suing each other over some provision in the original contracts regarding ownership of the band in the event of the death of either of them. While this is going on, Fagen isn’t gonna want to keep making money with the SD name if proceeds are going to Becker’s estate.
