"Pills" came on the radio this morning while wife and i were getting dressed. Wife: "I've never really kept up with St. Vincent, but I really like this song. I'm going to check out the album today."

Your wife sounds like a smart woman with great taste.
This record is so goddamn good. I can barely even stand it. It's so full of texture and mood. There's so much to unpack! And it's all over the goddamn map. Yet, someone, it all hangs together so well. It's almost like a concept album, the way it all just... fits. It's a fucking hurricane of ideas and melodies and layers and concepts.
I don't want to be to hyperbolic but my first thought was, "this is like her Kid A." It's such a huge leap forward while still being familiar and welcoming. And it's just so... well crafted. It's Kid A but warmer and hooky-er and dancier.
I dont agree with the Kid A comparison, because i dont think its that different than the previous one. I do agree that everything seems tied, seems like a collection of song with the same idea and ground behind them.
Really? This feels like a completely different record than the last one to me. I probably wouldn't know that Pills or Sugarboy and Savior were the same artist that did Rattlesnake and Huey Newton and Bring Me Your Loves if I was a casual listener and not a huge fan.
This record probably isn't the same sized leap from her last one that Kid A is from OK Computer. I agree with that. But it's the biggest equivalent in her career so far, I think. Of course, I like this better.
I feel its a great album. We only have this for one day so its too far to say ¨yeah, its really different¨. For me the leap she did with SM - ST was bigger than this one.

I think I can see what you're getting at. That makes sense. And you're right, it's only been one day. Which is why I feared I was being hyperbolic. Really she's taken a step in different direction with each new record. Actor to Strange Mercy was a big departure, too.
Oh yeah actor and SM was such a huge difference...and when you compare Actor with ST...its almost a different artist.
Totally. My first impressions of this new album made me feel similarly, too. Which is really all I was getting at. It might be a tad close to S/T but it still feels/sounds dramatically different across the whole record. That's what I love about Annie. She's always trying new things.
