Used to love it. Then for awhile it was all about the live tags....after hearing the version on PJ20 with Ed and Stone on the bus i fell in love again.

This is the first version of "Daughter" I ever heard. I thought the tag was part of the song, and that it was so cool. To this day I still enjoy listening to this version.
Cut down to structure, it just shouldn't work. Nothing really justifies the way it stands out from the pack. It's got a nice (but not necessarily gripping) base riff, a looping sort of structure that goes nowhere, and a vocal melody that is more "please make fun of me" than it is "I will drill my way into your brain." The arrangement builds on that foundation very successfully, giving it more of a sense of life and momentum, but that should still just feel like professional and talented musicians covering up what is essentially a filler piece.
Now they're in a way making everything sound like filler material. I was wondering about this, how come they seem to have lost the skills to achieve what they did here. It's in a way what is the biggest difference between "old" and "new" PJ. It's a matter of good taste in a way. They used to be able to combine somewhat modest elements into something strong. Now they are throwing things at songs that end up just staying there without contributing much to blend a song ultimately is.
This song is so well constructed and amazing compared to what is on those albums its like a total different ballpark. Its hard to praise songs from those albums when they also are capable of writing a song like this.

I love Daughter but Binaural and Riot Act are way more complex in terms of composition
Maybe in terms of chords or something, but not in terms of the overall structure of the song itself, the instrumentation, the tone.
The way this song builds to the solo and drops back to the simple softer chorus , and then builds back up is absolutely MASTERFUL and nothing on any of those albums is even close
