Not sure if I could approach this task without actually addressing both bands.

Pearl Jam's importance to me as a young listener was about intimacy and identity. They had a rawness to them, but they also had the capacity to soar. Nirvana sounded like dangerous hoodlums to my unwise ears-- there was a lot of punk rock aesthetic that I had not yet metabolized as a kid and couldn't make sense of. Break stuff. Scream. When Eddie screamed there was life in it. Cobain screamed and it sounded like agony.

Whatever else was in there, I always got a bit of playful adolescent nihilsm from Nirvana...maybe it dissipated over time, but it seemed to keep them from just being pouty or something. Pearl Jam, even when they were playful, never quite had abandon.

Another poet is addressing Nirvana on the next page. My poem can represent Pearl Jam's yin to Nirvana's yang but I can't mention the other band; or rather, I think doing so would dilute the impact of the poem.

Good call. I always thought the structure of that song was quite poetic.

I'd love to see a Eddie Vedder vs. Kurt Cobain rap battle.

So guys, I have a draft of this poem. I'm a little hesitant to put it up here, but if anyone thinks they'd like to give me some PJ fans' perspective critique on it, I'd be grateful. Obviously it would be helpful if you liked to read poetry, because this one's a bit strange.

I'm guessing I can assume that this is a private forum so the editor won't find it? If so I'll put it up on this thread, for a short time. But it has to be down before I submit it.

Nope, it's indexed in all the search engines. I found out the hard way.

Ah, OK then.

So if anyone thinks they can give me the fans' perspective and wants me to email it to them, just PM me your address.

By the way guys, this poem was accepted by the publisher. Which is nice.

I've had one email asking to see it. Sorry, but I probably shouldn't let it go now. I'll plug the book when it's out.
