Oh man, I love this already. Such great '80s "dark kids movie" vibes. I eat that shit up. I keep imagining it as a beautifully hand-drawn animated movie with a measured pace, like The Secret of NIMH.
Small touch I think is great: giving the cats black speech bubbles.

daw thanks. Book 2 is about a third of the way finished. Will hopefully finish it by September.

yes. One of the cats is basically Dragon from NIMH too. That's the two main references I think.

Read through my copy yesterday. Nice job, Burt. I especially like how the world feels more filled out with the little asides involving animals presumably unrelated to the main story.
