In practice the skin cracks because the fruit absorbs a lot of water in short time. What causes tomato's skin to crack is a large fluctuation in the amount of water it gets. Here it happens after a relatively long period between rainy days.
It also depends on the variety some are more prone to crack than others.

Just turned our vegie garden this morning. Mixed a bag of cow manure with our compost last week and now it's in our second patch. The first has tomatoes and basil going apeshit. We'll put more herbs in there over the coming days. The second patch will be bok choy and some other autumn>winter veg. The beans climber needs attention too.

It's been neglected due to the aussie summer sun, too many fucking mozzies and a snake incident last year. In fact we didn't venture in the yard much for a month after that.

Sounds like you have a decent size garden! What other herbs do you plant?
I have sage coming up finally. I've planted sage, chives, stevia, chamomile and basil so far for herbs. Decided to blow off work for a few hours and plant the rest of my seeds. Best decision I've made all week Sort of worried I planted too much, guess a pressure canner is going to be my next big purchase.

Say, while canning is on my mind, do any of you guys have a pressure canner? I'm currently considering an All-American - anything better on the market?

Fairly big, yeah. We had another snake so my time has been used up getting all the edges sorted and crap out from under the house. Nervy times.

But we have started the bean and pea garden and also my son's lettuce and chive and marigold garden. The basil will be pesto'd when I have a spare hour and then we will get it all going.

No goodies at all this year yet aside from a few pea pods. My squash plants have only produced male blossoms so far and my tomatoes plants refuse to grow.
Anyone else gotten any good fruit?

I've got about a 20x20 garden going in my backyard right now. Or, it will be going--we just tilled and furrowed and fenced this weekend. Planting beans tomorrow. Mississippi, y'all.

Just ordered 5 different varieties of heirloom tomato seeds for this year. Very excited.

i know i'm a lazy bum, but sometimes i do wish i could have a small garden...especially when veggies aren't on sale...my parents have a fairly large garden, and all used to run a small greenhouse operation
