so believe it or not, it actually used to be better. they changed the recipe up about 4 years ago, and it was on par with things like blind pig from russian river.

try a chicago beer ... like pipeworks, revolution, half acre, marz, forbidden root, marz, hop butcher, etc.

Do you happen to know how the recipe changed? I haven't sought it out in a while but now I am curious.

they would never confirm, but one of the brewers that went on work elsewhere mentioned that when there was a shortage of citra hops they used a blend with nelson. it actually tastes a little maltier now.

Had Ninja v Unicorn last night (from the bottle), not great. What ever kind of hops they used tastes like rubber to me

Ah that was indeed a rough time, height of Citra's popularity along with a blight coupled with a booming yet unforgiving market. I can't exactly say I blame them but for such a well-known single hop pale I am a bit surprised though ultimately not really. Two quite different characteristic hops. Interestingly my local brewery at that time was brewing a fantastic single-hop Citra DIPA (which is fairly difficult IMO) and had to make a recipe change, they chose Falconer's Flight which brought it's own bag-of-surprises being a blend. Much to my dismay, when the supply/demand evened out the 'market' had inclined them to stick with the mix. Oddly enough FF is being retired soon and though they have the percentages through the years to replicate I am pushing to get at least one old school batch on at least a 30. Thanks for the info BTW.
