Sours: are these only really enjoyed by people who have just had way too much beer and need something different? I just can't get into them.

It’s a slightly different market than just beer people. A lot of people who don’t enjoy many of the traditional styles like sours, also they tend to be really

Expensive and hard to obtain so that appeals to some people too.

Sours clicked pretty easily for me. I’m a big fan. Actually, I spent last weekend with my girlfriend in the Duluth, MN area and I had this Aquavit barrel aged dark red sour from Thirsty Pagan in Superior, WI. It is FANTASTIC. I went back the next day specifically to get another pour.

Sours appeal to me as a wine drinker more than as a beer drinker. They’re great for beer dinners, especially if you’re pairing with cheese and meats before a meal, which is almost always something I munch on when I’m cooking. There are so many variables that go into making a good sour. Like; what’s polluting the fermentation process? How old is this bottle? Is this light or heavy? How does that affect the pucker factor? What’s the carbonation like? etc etc. It’s biology AND chemistry, which actually makes it even more interesting than wine.

Sours are a lot of fun, but of course there are some really off-putting ones that can ruin it for you.

Has an "Alehouse 75" at dogfish last night, which I guess is them mixing half a keg of 60 minute with half a keg of 90 minute, but dang... it was better than either one alone. good on whatever bartender thought that shit up.

Must have found that malty sweet spot to balance those two extremes.

Something made me revisit my old Flying Saucer account. Joined their UFO club in June of 2010 and I never made it to my 200th beer plate. I’ve been 17 beers away since 2014. Nice.

for anyone interested, last night i mashed about 8-10 blackberries at the bottom of a French press and then poured a 2017 regular Bourbon County and let it steep for 60-75 mins. I strained and drank it. It was really, really solid. But again, I love fruited BA stouts. That's it.

I got beer for Christmas! Hubby order 12 of my favourite dark IPA from the Stack brewery in Sudbury. It's only available in restaurants and bars here and even then, not all the time. I'm still sick with a cold and have no taste buds otherwise I'd have one right now.

I will do a variation in this very soon. I like the way you think.

One question: won’t letting your beer steep like this make for some really flat beer?

Sours have been big for a while here. AZ Wilderness does a watermelon gose and a smoked apple gose that are excellent. 12 West does a plum weisse that is killer.

I would guess they are pretty popular here because they are pretty refreshing on a 120-degree day.

Not really. BC holds its carbonation pretty well. I always cover it pretty tightly though. On the vanilla, I let it steep in a sealed howler.

Howlers are 32-ounce glass bottles.
