Checked in on Sap's in Austin while in town a couple of days ago. This was our frequent spot when my wife and I were dating. They haven't missed a beat. Spiciest green beans I've ever had, and they also serve a flavorful garlic chili sauce on the side of most dishes.
I tried their Nuer Ob and I'm still thinking about it. Braised beef stew seasoned with thai spices, tomatoes and yellow onions. Good curry alternative if you're in the mood for something a little more savory.
Went to Alta Calidad last night. It's Akhtar Nawab's newest place.
A decade ago, when I first moved to NYC, my taste in food was limited. I wasn't interested in anything "exotic." My wife worked at the EU, a restaurant in the East Village where Akhtar was the head chef. One night I went in to the EU to sit and chill and wait for my wife to get off of her shit. Akhtar sent me a plate of octopus on the house. It forever changed my life. I never would have ordered that for myself.
Years later, Akhtar had a new place in the West Village called Eletaria, which he opened with another former co-worker, a GM, my wife had worked with at her first restaurant in NYC. It was my absolute favorite place in the city for a while. I went there for two birthday celebrations. It was there, at Eletaria, that I first had Sweet Breads.
Octopus is my all time favorite dish. Sweet Breads are a close second. The point is that Akhtar's food literally changed my life. The man is an idol of mine and a true genius.
His new place, Alta Calidad, is in Brooklyn. In my neighborhood. That's where I chose to spend my 39th birthday last night. My wife and I went and it was extraordinary. It was everything to me. The food was immaculate. The cocktails were fresh and exciting. It lacked pretension and excess. Holy shit! I goddamn loved it.
I've noticed a lot of places using cooking scissors now, even read an article about it last week and diners stealing them...anyway put me down for the spaghetti and bone marrow..enjoy
