Crohn's and colitis abound in both my and my wife's family! We need a thread that focuses on healthy digestion. Too soon to know if it could be merged with the poop thread...

Artificial Sweeteners Have Toxic Effects on Gut Bacteria
Six FDA-approved artificial sweeteners (aspartame, sucralose, saccharine, neotame, advantame, and acesulfame potassium-k) were found to be toxic to digestive gut microbes.

small intestine too? is he on a bag? fucking awful...

my sis had her large intestine removed, she has what's called a "j pouch," a re-shaped small intestine doing its best to do the work of the large intestine

my wife's uncle has a bag, and then her mom and other uncle both have colitis and just try to manage it as best they can. it's crazy how those autoimmune diseases can wreak havoc on ones body, and i have a couple other friends who also have crohns or colitis, but i've never heard of someone losing their teeth. he must have it really badly, and i'm so sorry to hear it

My gut health has been subpar for the past several days. I think it was the two breakfast burritos from McD's Wednesday morning.

:hooray: (not that you have colitis, but that you know about VSL-3)

Never heard of this term specifically, but I do know that both my sister and MiL (former colitis/current J-poucher, and lifelong colitis, respectively) is very picky with which carbs they eat, so presumably they are clued into it. Or at least my sister, who has taken a very self-informed approach to this. My MiL is more of the "whatever the doc recommends" sort.

Just for the record, all the people close to me who have crohns/colitis:

Dear friend and former boss
Former girlfriend
Sister
Cousin
Mother in law
My MiL's two brothers

I've been surrounded by this disease for years now yet have never had to experience it first hand.
