i think precisely zero people participating in this thread, myself included, are qualified to comment on the impact seeing yourself represented in mainstream art has on a people not used to seeing it.
and LVs comment about artless commercialism is less than worthless until he actually sees the movie
He is talking about more than just the movie. its weird you cant see that.
And with the " fair points"...he is been called cynic because of what he said.

How is this post not cynicism:

This is actually some ingenious marketing strategy. If you load up your corporate junk with concerted effort to appear racially empowering, it all but makes you invulnerable to criticism, and people think even less about shoveling their cash toward your product. I guess it makes sense that this is the only way we're truly going to make progress in America - united by artless commercialism.

you can have a serious discussion about how art is sponsored, supported, commidified, and the way this can both constrain and enhance the vision and reach of it. but you can also spout off canned boilerplate talking points that dont actually speak in any way to the art in question.
this isnt a question of what I can or cannot ‘see’, VG. im just not impressed by stock commentary

I think there may be something lost in translation, because the Spanish word "cínico" has a different (harsher, insulting) meaning than the English word "cynical"

something does not become artless simply because a corporation pays for it any more than something is inherently of a higher quality because a gofundme campaign paid for it.

Yeah it's a problem I've encountered a few times
Cynicism: An inclination to believe that people are motivated purely by self-interest; scepticism. Cinismo: The attitude of a person who lies with impudence and defends beliefs or practices that deserve general disapproval in a shameless, indecent and dishonest way.
Not sure which meaning VG interpreted but it kind of sounded like he thought people were calling LV a name
No, no...i wasnt thinking they call him a name...i do not agree LV 's post is cynic at all. He is displaying a truth there, an awful one, but its one a lot of people cant see yet.
There is nothing good about that pic at all, and for a reason, masses seem to miss the point. Regardless on how good the movie is or not. Thats why i dont agree with Stip, he basically shuts down LV because he haven't seen the movie...it doesnt matter, he talking about something else here.
