A thread for discussing whether successful actors are actually good actors. What does it mean to be a good actor anyway? Is this person a good actor or are they just well cast? Are they one dimensional but really good at what they do or are they versatile and truly a great actor? Does it fucking matter?
John Travolta - Immensely successful. Is he a good actor or did he just have a few good roles? Grease, Welcome Back Kotter, Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Face/Off. All successful movies/characters but....is travolta any fucking good? I'm not sure
Stallone? Rocky is a fantastic fucking movie. First one is absolutely great. But, no. I dont think he is.
Nic Cage? Oh baby, should have his own thread. Yes.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman - Absolutely mesmerizing
Jared Letto - Burt?
Jim Carrey - Starts off as a comedic clown. Dude always brought a relatable "heart" to his characters and certainly blossomed into some very memorable roles. He's picky. I think he has real talent
Sandler?
Heath Ledger - Certainly was just kind of starting to come into some truly incredible performances. Gone too soon. Would probably call him an incredible actor.

He fucking sucks
I would have thought you'd love him. Huh.
He was alright in Dallas Buyers Club, but the character kinda fit him.
He tries to take over every scene. He overacts. He thinks interesting characters are a collection of wacky quirks. No depth. He feels like a cartoon character in every movie.
I hope his brief time being considered a serious actor is almost over.

Saorsie Ronan is my best friend.
I need to re-visit Atonement because although she is currently one of my favorites, I really hated her back when Atonement was new and it was the only thing I had seen her in. I hated her in a way that, looking back, it's really weird for a grown man to hate a child. But now I don't know if I hated her back then because---
a) Atonement is just a terrible movie and it's not her fault (unlikely, Joe Wright is good) b) I just hated children generally back then (I don't think this is it) c) I just hated females generally back then (uh-oh, maybe) d) I was just jealous of someone younger than me having so much success (sadly possible) e) She was actually just really bad in that movie (unlikely, tbh) f) She was actually really great in that movie at playing a detestable character and I was too dumb to separate the two (perhaps)

Yeah it was probably c or f. I saw that and didn't care much for it also. I know she plays the younger sister, but I remember zero about her being in it.
The first thing I remember taking notice of her in was The Grand Budapest Hotel.
