He's just overreacting to the overly positive reactions. It's fine.

I watched this today! As I mentioned in the movies thread, I was looking forward to it for a long time, but since I never go to the movies, I avoided reading about it for months. It looked wonderful and I enjoyed the feel of the world and all of that stuff, but I was kind of "meh" on the big plot devices. I don't think it was that clever or original at all, which I would've forgiven if there was something fresh about the characters, but "dead kid with cancer drives main character" just didn't do it for me.

I wish the aliens were just humans all along.

I should've been clearer! Because, yeah, of course it wasn't what drove her, since it technically happens at the end of the narrative. But it was framed that way for 90 minutes, which helped me lose interest, I think.

That actually makes sense to me. I disagree, in that it worked on me, but I totally understand what you mean and why it affected you that way.

Finally watched this. They did a stellar job of taking the narrative thrust of the short story and adapting it for film. If this doesn't win for best adapted screenplay, I'll be stymied.

The only minor quibble I had was the C4 explosion scene. Totally unnecessary, felt like a studio note.

At the end, my wife and I embraced each other and cried. A+.

Hey man, it's not like it's a new thought: We love each other madly, but are going to die someday. But when Amy Adams asked Jeremy Renner "If you knew your whole life beginning to end, would you change anything?", we both just felt all the feelings.

Although I think it'd be a lazy critique to say "The entire movie was too much like Contact," I think it's fair to say that that plot point was too much like Contact.

they can communicate telepathically. They put that image in her head of her daughter and showing her an explosion is about to happen.

But what did any of that have to do with the 3,000 year issue?

Not sure of this has already been answered. But I think it's just a simple plot device: by providing a means for the world powers to come together in a spirit of collaboration, then presumably that would lead to some sort of benefit for the aliens down the line.

We had a cheeseburger/cuckold scenario lined up for our Nashville meetup, but you blew it.
