Dan carlin is the guest on the most recent Rogan podcast. I could listen to these guys talk all day.

Blindboy boatclub.
He’s kind of an phenomenon here but his podcast which is only a few episodes old is getting huge numbers everywhere. It’s thought provoking insightful and just a really cool listen. He talks about mental health a lot and dropping toxic masculinity and embracing feminism but can switch to absurd and surreal topics just like that. Really worth giving him a spin. I think RM would really like it.

Here’s the episode I’d go with for starters. From Conor McGregor being an arsehole to pine martins.

Fascinating episode

On this episode we talk about one of the darkest patches on US history and a pan-atlantic collusion that could have been the driving force behind the global actions of military, scientific and political powers for the last 70 years, Operation Paperclip.

In the last days of WW2 the Nazi elite were wondering what their future would look like. Impending trials for war crimes would definitely be a possibility; and some took the opportunity by pawning their military and scientific knowledge in exchange for freedom and exclusion from prosecution in Nuremberg.

Operation Overcast and later Operation Paperclip was the US intelligence services plan to gain as much Nazi engineering, military, scientific and espionage intelligence they could before the Russians. Flocks of now ex-Nazis with no fuhrer to guide them, ran into the arms of the waiting US and Russian soldiers on both sides of Germany. They were interviewed and spilled all the info for a chance to be installed into US military intelligence, and in some cases, get to stay living in Germany spying on the USSR from their own home town.

The US has had a shady history at the best of times, but harbouring Nazis and cooperating with them as they greatly advance the space program, increase military might, give intel and previous files owned by the SS to the US intelligence community and eventually become revered members of western society, made a lot of people suspicious of the motives of these ex-Nazis.

Names liek Wernher Von Braun, Josef Mengele, Arthur Rudolph and Klaud Barbie are just a couple of the 1600 scientists brought to the states for their knowledge. But on this episode we argue the ethics of sucha an information acquisition, how the scientific experiments done on prisoners of war can be not only flawed but just cruel torture; and the collusion of huge respected organisation to smuggle uninterred Nazis out of Germany to escape prosecution in a program known as the Ratlines.

About to spend a bunch of time in airplanes so if anyone has any good podcast episode recommendations they think I'd be into, I'd appreciate them

I think you would LOVE episode "#2 Gregor" of the podcast Heavyweight. It's about music and regret and envy and friendship and love.
My all-time favorite podcast episode is "#3 Belt Buckle" from the sorely missed podcast Mystery Show.
My last rec will be the first episode, "Ron Paul's Baby", of the podcast Beautiful/Anonymous. Comedian Chris Gethard just takes phone calls from random people and talks to them for an hour. The first ep is special, was excerpted on This American Life a while ago, and may give you some insight about how to help lenny and dev improve their lives next time you see them in tiny.
Enjoy your flight.

You and me seem to have a very similar taste in what makes a good podcast episode so good. I love the first two that you mentioned and will now put Beautiful/Anonymous on my shortlist of things to check out. Thanks for that.

True (and very cheesy) anecdote about Heavyweight -- the general concept behind that podcast is what prompted me to start posting on RM again.

End-of-the-year warning: Don't read any "Best Podcasts of 2017" lists. If you're anything like me, this will cause the length of your podcast queue to grow in length from "unreasonable" to "insane"
