LV do you have any recommendations for film podcasts?

I’m told the Leonard Maltin one is excellent.

It's pretty good but so sanitized at the same time. Makes San Quentin seem like a vacation destination. It's like they aren't allowed to talk about anything too ugly.

Are we listening to the same thing? Not at all my impression.

The first two episodes are about getting a good cellie and having pets. That CO at the end of the did only let's them talk about kids stuff. Does it get better?

Listen to The SHU. It’s pretty horrific.

No, I haven’t found any serious film podcasts that I like.

Ah bummer.
The empire magazine one can be good. Also another one called script notes has screen writers and sometimes directors on. You might find some episodes with writers you like in there.

I listened to a few more. The circumstances of solitary confinement are disturbing as hell but then the next two episodes are about how everybody gets laid during visits and how nobody has ever gotten stabbed. It sounds like a bureau of prison sponsored kids special.

I started listening to the Dax Shepherd podcast because it was in the comedy section and I thought "he was funny on Punk'd, right?". The first episode with his wife they start out arguing for about 10-15 minutes, but then it gets better. It's kind of refreshing how openly they talk about things. This openness carries over to the next episode with Ashton Kutcher and they talk about fatherhood and what it's like being married to wives who are more successful than they are. There's some good talk in there about middle America and trying to make a show for them because they are forgotten about and what that means in politics as well. Weird, I know.

One good thing about the show is that once it's done he sits down with the producer and they talk about the things that were wrong in the show, kind of like a fact-checking. I kind of like that part because he doesn't let himself get away with saying stupid shit and they also correct/clarify the guest if need be.

Just binged the Watergate pod "Slow Burn". I knew the skeleton of the story, the rest was fascinating.

Second season announced yesterday too. Step up Bill and Monica.

Quote:
The dream (and nightmare) of the ‘90s is alive in Slow Burn. After spending its first season examining the Watergate scandal and the fall of Richard Nixon, Slate’s political documentary podcast is coming back for its sophomore season on August 8. This time, host Leon Neyfakh and producer Andrew Parsons will train their attention on a more recent presidential scandal, the shadow of which looms large over us even today: the impeachment of Bill Clinton in the late 1990s.

When Slow Burn debuted last November, the podcast presented itself as a pursuit of the following question: What did it feel like to live through a significant historical episode? Neyfakh and Parsons were additionally guided by a more pressing question: How can the past help us understand the present? The show’s efforts to build an analytical bridge between Watergate and the current presidential drama didn’t end up being particularly revelatory, but the gambit was nonetheless appreciated and the quality of its execution was far above so many other Trump-themed and Trump-adjacent podcasts. With its focus on the Clinton impeachment — which features individuals and questions that remain very much active today — the Slow Burn team has the opportunity to more immediately thread together the past and the present, and as a result, insert itself more aggressively into current political conversations.

Expect overlooked side-stories and semi-forgotten characters (Linda Tripp! Lucianne Goldberg!), excessive use of the -gate suffix (File-gate! Travel-gate! Nanny-gate!), and all the details that come with the ‘90s (fax machines!).

Chris and Lyn appear to have the perfect marriage. But when Lyn goes missing, dark secrets are buried. This is no fairytale, but a sordid story of strangely close twin brothers, teenage student lovers, and probable murder.

This Australian murder mystery is picking up serious heat. What was just a missing woman and probable murder case has exposed a sex ring across 3 high schools. Former students are gathering and sharing their stories and an investigation is in progress.

The podcast is a bit slow at times but it appears incredibly thorough. I grew up in that area although I moved there 4 years after the alleged murder. It's all a bit too real with certain places being all too familiar.

I'm still listening to some episodes here and there and it's really refreshing the way he interviews people. His interview with Jon Favreau was really good and helped me understand a little bit more of the on-the-ground stuff that is going on with the upcoming election. I also liked the Anna Faris, Ellen, and Jimmy Kimmel episodes because of the way he can get them to talk about things.

I haven't listened to all of them - he's pretty prolific and they're (mostly) rather long - but I'm sure I'll get through them before summer is out. The thing that I like best about the show continues to be that at the end of it he the other host (?) sit down and talk about the things that came up in passing to clarify what they were talking about or things that someone said that wasn't correct.

I wonder what the episode with Marc Maron is going to be like.

5 eps in and I concur.

I’ve fallen pretty hard for the American Cinematographer podcast. Fascinating interviews with DPs. And they really get into the nitty gritty technical details that I love about visuals, like lens, lighting, aspect ratio, and film stock choices.
