The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.
This takes place 10 years before ToS. Does this take place before or after Entetprise?
Enterprise took place between 2151-2161. Discovery starts in 2255. The original series (with Kirk) took place between 2265-2269. TOS movies 2273-2293. TNG 2364-2370. DS9 2369-2375. Voyager 2371-2378. TNG movies until 2379 (with time travel to 1984, 2150, 2293 and various events between 2370-2379).
What year did George Kirk die and the timeline split?

Probably 2233, but Discovery is in the Prime timeline, same as TOS and TNG and the shows listed above. Different from the three rebooted movies.
Finally got to see the first two episodes today. Thought the graphics could have been better. The story was decent, nothing incredible. Still gave me hope that this can turn into a good show. Hope they build up more characters. A bit light in that so far.

Watched the first episode. I fucking hate the Klingon redesign.
Also, I think it would've served the story better to have Number One die out there in her fight with the Klingon. A lot more dramatic for the Federation that way. Plus, I don't care for her.

She is supposed to be the main character, of the entire series, in the way Star Trek captains have been before.
Episode 3 was interesting. Had a couple dumb moments but I'm curious to see where it's going. It's more BSG than ST though.
Yes, I actually think Episode 3 had some great moments. Reminded me of Star Trek Enterprise.
Of course there was the whole Alien-like sequence that wasn't explained. That was strange.
Also the technology at the end sounded extremely advanced and probably even impossible. Yet, this show is before TOS in the timeline, and a long time before TNG, DS9 and VOY. That could easily become an issue.
Yeah it's a mistake to state that this is in the prime universe. They should make it non cannon so they don't have to worry about lining stuff up. No prequel show will ever look right compared to TOS.
They play awfully loose with cannon. I wouldn't care if they didn't insist this was in the prime universe. There were a couple pretty large anachronisms in ep 6.

It’s inevitable. I just don’t care for the actress, I guess. She seems so wooden. Her storyline is actually pretty intriguing, I just don’t think she executes it well.
