I get an Akira vibe from it. Which I guess shouldn't be a surprise considering Akira is Blade Runner, but still it feels more Akira for some reason.

Slightly better still:

I just finished the first vol of Akira, and the vibe is there for sure. Pretty much every road reminded me of BR.

I didn’t hate it. Just left me cold. It didn’t engage me at all. And the all the fight sequences seemed to be totally at odds with the whole rest of the movie.

It looked handsome but that’s about all.

I completely agree about the fight/action scenes. Very awkward and ill-fitting.

I gotta find the Dunkirk thread then.

Update: There is no Dunkirk thread.

But I did find a lot of posts disparaging it, those were fun.

I liked Dunkirk (didn't love it) but it's complete and utter trash next to Blade Runner 2049.

Hand on heart I still don’t get Dunkirk. Is there a weird time loop thing going on or something?
It felt real though. It captured the spirit and tone of the time. But it’s an excercise in suspense with no real outcome or payoff.
So I guess it has something in common with Blade runner.

‘Because we can. Because why not’

Which is it’s own kind of art I guess.

It's Memento but set in WW2.

And as I said the other day: The only truth in that movie is the setting. Even the flyers that were in the opening scene were fake.
Quote:
However, although some events are based on true history, the characters and the storyline are fictional; Branagh's role is a composite character.[179] When the beach scenes were shot, the weather was worse than during the real evacuation; Nolan explained that this helped to understand the danger faced by the pleasure boats.[180] In one scene, an officer gives a salute without wearing his military beret, which a veteran pointed out as inaccurate protocol.[181] The German planes had noses painted yellow in the film; this was not actually done until a month after Dunkirk.[179] The involvement of French, African, and Indian soldiers was either limited or left out.[169][176] Modern shots were used for the aerial photographs, whereas in reality the town was substantially in ruins by the time of the evacuation. The design of the leaflets dropped from the air demanding the British surrender was artistic and not one used in 1940.[176]
So many weird shots, like the scene where they evacuated the boat and they said, "Come on Gibson" (the French guy) and instead of getting off the boat he ends up drowning and they linger on him being drowned for a couple seconds. What was that even supposed to show?

I loved the air shots though, that was all amazing. it's just the parts where they tried to show people that was dumb. Cutting back and forth between night and day like they are concurrent events was disorienting.

I need to see 2049 now. Side note: I keep thinking this is about Rush 2049. That was an awesome game.

The level of incompetence in the editing and direction of Dunkirk is truly surprising. And concerning. People don’t even seem to understand the basic GRAMMAR of cinema anymore, let alone how human emotion works.

Are they trying to change the grammar though?
I know what you mean and I see it a lot these days but the only conclusion I came to is well maybe styles are changing and evolving.

Did you see Dunkirk? They tell you the end of the movie and then go about telling you how they got there. This is repeated throughout the movie where they show you something and then a little later show you what happened previously.

Did you see Dunkirk? Because that's... that's not how I remember the movie.

OH SHIT MAYBE I'M MEMENTO

Have to agree with bune. Nolan is doing his thing in here.
You’re not alone if you didn’t see it. I don’t think most people did.

The movie starts at a specific point in the action. And then there are a couple different aspects that we jump back to that wind back toward the climax, yes. It's not a linear narrative. But, unless I'm misunderstanding bune, I don't recall what he's describing as accurate.
