Owen Wilson hosts the season premiere on October 2 and will be followed by Kim Kardashian, Rami Malek, Jason Sudeikis. Musical guests are Kacey Musgraves, Halsey, Young Thug, and Brandi Carlisle. I haven’t seen any cast announcements yet.

Deadline speculates that with no explicit news otherwise, indication is that Cecily Strong, Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, and Kate McKinnon are all returning despite ample evidence to the contrary. Report is that Lorne has reached a new level of "flexibility" with regard to scheduling, allowing them to focus on other projects during the season.

Lorne’s too old to give a shit anymore.

I liked Beck Bennett. Hope to see him in something cool in the future.
He's GREAT. One of my all-time favorite cast members...
I have a gut feeling he's a functional alcoholic. Always seems to be drinking in any social media stuff I see, and his bloat increase during his SNL tenure has been very noticeable. I worry this is the beginning of the end of his career, but sincerely hope to be proven wrong.

i think the actors are only a fraction of the issue with the show. the writing is just abysmal.
Reading between the lines, I think your issue has more to do with the entrenched format:
-Cold Open (political/topical) -1-2 big sketches, the obvious crowd pleasers aimed at the widest possible market. Side note: if you're poking fun at the host's celebrity, this is where you do it. -A commercial spoof + digital short -Music #1 -Weekend Update -More zany/outlandish sketches, less big crowd appeal, more niche humor -Music #2 -10-1: The weirdest sketch of the night -Roll credits
This is the basic format of every episode, and any changes are minor. There is some great stuff to be found in there, but it's typically at the back half of the show. If I could change anything about SNL, it wouldn't be the cast or even the writers, but just the adherence to rigid structure that puts the riskier stuff around 12:15am when mom and dad have fallen asleep, or when the diehard fans of this week's host/musical guest have lost interest and started scrolling through their phones. Forget mom and dad. Focus on the comedy fans.
