I've watched more SNL in the last year than I have since the 90s glory days. Is this show going through a renaissance of sorts or is this just pandemic TV habits for me? It's a lot funnier than I remember it being in the last decade and a half. The cast and writers don't seem to be doing the same "beat the same joke to death" thing that used to kill skits for me.

As RM's resident SNL historian, I'd say that the current period is marked by wildly different results: Boring, tired political/topical stuff (with the occasional home run), contrasted with really fun and outlandish/absurdist stuff that used to be reserved for the ten-to-one slot.
The other big difference is that the entire cast feels lab-created in their purpose. Unlike the 90s, when the cast was largely filled with standup comics, and the aughts which ushered in a new era of sketch writers raised on prior sketch comedy and with the pedigree of UCB, Second City, etc, the current crop seems to have had their sights on SNL since childhood, and followed an established path to get there. Andy Samberg begat Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, and Chloe Fineman (whose youtube videos had gone viral prior to getting auditions).
What feels unique to the current iteration is how inclusivity measures have brought in some really fresh voices and memorable comedy: writer Julio Torres, Aidy Bryant, Michael Che, etc are all super talented, but never would've flown in prior iterations.
Pete Davidson is a fucking drag and needs mental health services more than he needs a career in comedy. I think they keep him around because he's popular with the kids.

When Machine Gun Kelly was on, all me and my wife could talk about during the show was how much we bet him and Pete Davidson hung out during rehearsals. Sure enough, during the closing credits, there they were...chumming it up.
The absurdist stuff is hilarious now. The Hot Damn skit from last week had me rolling. But so did the WU bit where they cancelled a bunch of kids.

That was a disappointing episode, one of the least funny episodes of the season. Bennett’s Tom Brady bit was good and I thought the housewives sign sketch was alright but otherwise a forgettable evening. Rege Jean Page from Bridgerton hosts next week. I don’t watch the show and am not familiar with him.

Just watching the A&E special Chris Farley: Anything for a Laugh from 2019.
Fucking heartbreaking. They have a lot of SNL alumni as well as old friends and fam telling stories about how they saw his decline. Ackroyd, Spade, Goodman, Nealon, Franken, his brothers all remembering him. It's the best doc I've seen of him yet.
