Was the opening sketch a recurring premise/characters?

Yes, and Ryan Gosling was in the first one, which was the best one. He broke then too.

The costumes would have gotten a laugh but Heidi Gardner’s reaction put it over the top, no question

When SNL debuted in 1974 the Carol Burnett Show was still on and they regularly aired sketches with cast members laughing. That’s considered hacky and cheap laugh by pro comedy standards. Lorne discouraged it early on and Belushi in particular hated it. Over time Lorne’s stance has softened and supposedly is okay with organic (not staged) breaks now. Honestly, would “Stefon” become as popular if Hader played it straight?
That said it may be a cheap laugh but damn if it’s not effective, Harvey Korman trying not to break is still funny; still holds up.

There’s no way she saw Butthead before she turned to him. Her reaction was priceless.

And the King of the Hill at the end was the icing on the cake.

Overall a highly enjoyable episode. I can honestly say I laughed at every one of them. Of course, Gosling breaking in them all helped. The Cookie Crumble was ok but when she nailed him with the wheelchair, that sealed it. Even the music video was a little funny. The only thing that kept the last one alive was them breaking.

And Mikey Day keepin it straight at the same time was solid.

Update had some great lines too. O.J. joke was hilarious.

i read that the skit to include beavis and butthead has been pitched for like 5 years and was pretty much mikey day's white whale. when gossling was coming on as the host it finally made it through rehersals instead of being cut like it normally did. gardner knew the skit but had no idea of the makeup involved and that was indeed the first time she saw it

She'd seen the makeup but not the prosthetics.
