I am here to tell you that this movie is bad.
(I don't consider anything below to be a real spoiler, but for the sake of those who want to go in without knowing anything outside of what's in the trailers, I'm putting it behind a cut.)
- You can see how they were going for the whole 80s-fantasy-movie wackiness but it is entirely too self-conscious to surrender completely to it. The tone is all wrong. This movie seems to be snickering to itself, about itself, the whole way through. Like Jimmy Fallon in a bad SNL skit.
- For all this talk of how funny this movie was supposed to be, I didn't really laugh. Maybe once? I can't remember. A lot of the humor fell completely flat for me, often feeling super contrived and out of character, full of internet-isms. At one point Thor says to Hela "you are just... the worst!". At another, Loki says to somebody "you had ONE job!". Ha ha. Get it? Like that popular internet meme. Ha ha.
- In its pursuit of a breezy, brisk pace and lighthearted tone, it winds up feeling empty and inconsequential. The movie presents events that are supposed to be earth-shattering to our characters' entire worlds and their place therein, but there is no sense of gravitas to any of it. And yes, I understand, it is exhausting when every movie features characters that are ponderous and self-serious but going the complete opposite direction you end up with a movie where you don't care about what happens to these characters, because nothing seems to matter to these characters.
- The action scenes were almost entirely devoid of excitement or drama, aside from a shot or two during the final battle that seemed plucked from a wholly different film.
- Set design and art direction were ugly and real cheap-looking, for the most part. The Saakar junkyard was cool.
- Thor gets electrocuted A LOT in the first half of this movie. Like twenty times. Might've been the best thing about it, tbh.
- Hela was good but so much of the conflict occurred away from her that she felt like a bit player in this story.
- Valkryie is supposed to be a badass. We know she is a badass because she is constantly swigging alcohol and grimacing. Fun character but so goddamn heavy-handed. Also I didn't buy her struggle, or the resolution thereof.
- Jeff Goldblum was fun to watch. His character is basically Hedonism Bot from Futurama.
- Dr. Strange's involvement felt even more pointless and shoehorned-in than Falcon's scene in Ant-Man. And I think it was even shorter. That whole sequence was fucking weird.
- Remember how the Hulk CGI looked unfinished in the trailers? It looks unfinished in the movie as well.
- Why was Hulk in this.
- Hulk's ass is in this.
- Why was Hulk's ass in this.
Also, if you were wondering whether this prediction was correct,

There are a lot of shots that I like (the ones that look like 17th century paintings) but they will inevitably be part of some flashback / retelling of past events / quick montage and not the actual plot
Yup
Both of the other MCU movies released this year were better. I like watching Hemsworth do his thing, but this felt like a big waste of time
