Books as well. I was bored crazy 100 pages into Game Of Thrones when reading it in 2008. After the third book the series was one of my all time favorites. Happens all the time with books.

I've only recently started putting books down if they aren't gripping me.

I couldn't read books then. Nearly always a bit bored at the start.

It depends on how long the book is, but I always try to give it 50 to 100 pages, no matter what. Even if I hate it. I can only think of three books that I started reading and then put down because I just couldn't keep slogging through them.

The Hobbit is the only one I’ve disliked so much I just stopped.

50-100 pages of boredom sounds like unbearable misery. You’re nuts.

I finished The Hobbit. But I probably wouldn't have if I wasn't in the middle of my "read it all the way through no matter what" phase.

It's not always that bad. And there are plenty of times when the story kicks in and the rest of the journey makes the beginning totally worth it.

The payoff is usually more than worth it. If the start is good it might fade away anyway.

I liked the book. The movies were awful though.

To be fair, I hate reading.

I was a terrible reader growing up. I wanted to be a reader. I wanted to like books and to be able to read, comprehend, and discuss them with the people in my life who value books and are great readers. The only way to get there was to just do it. I just decided I would finish every book I picked up, no matter what.

The book started really poorly, for me. The trolls in the forest was the firsts interesting scene and it didn't get good until Riddles in the Dark. But I liked everything from that chapter to the end.

I only watched the first Hobbit movie. It was so god awful that I never bothered with the other 100, or however many they ended up making.

I used to hate reading, too. I totally get that. I think there's probably a connection, too, between your dislike for reading and your dislike for TV shows.

You are both lucky and smart then.

I read it back in 2000. It's been a while. What I remember the most is that I enjoyed the entire feel of it more than anything.
