Joey. I knew you wouldn't let me down on that Friends discussion. Thanks for putting it so eloquently, friend.

Trag, there was a pretty wide income gap between Chandler, Ross and Rachel versus Phoebe, Joey and Monica. White privaleged as they were, I think it's telling that the three happiest Friends were the ones who were poor while they were following their dreams trying and failing to be chefs, actors and songwriters. (Almost typed that with a straight face.)

Friends is white-washed. The catch phrases are annoying. Seinfeld did man children better. If I had to choose between this or better TV, I'd choose better TV. I don't have to choose, though. I can have my cake and eat it too. I'm a 30 something middle class American living in a city, just like they are!

It's a special thing when art can enlighten the consumer to the struggles of others; LV's dismissal of progressive art is troubling...

But Friends is not progressive art. Portaying the arts -- songwriting, acting, and cooking -- as the sandbox of upper-class white people (which Phoebe, Joey, and Monica would almost certainly need to be to pursue those dreams in nice late-90s Manhattan apartments) is completely true to life and not at all empowering to the non-white, non-cis-gendered people who aren't born with the generational wealth or other opportunities readily available to upper-middle class whites, abd is therefore not enlightening to the viewer.

Also I've got a pretty good buzz kicking in (amaro spritz followed by a G&T), so I'm not responsible for my contributions to this discussion from here on out.

Ah yes, this is a problem for the socially conscious Friends viewer.

If you like Friends, you're basically a nazi.

Pretty much. Nearly three pages of semi meaningful discussion on this show was way more than I ever dreamed of when I posted.

Joey's ranking is almost as good as mine FYI

The idea that artistic expression (even mainstream television) that conforms to or even promotes a particular perspective is somehow more valuable than art that does not is pretty ridiculous, guys.

I never dismissed progressive art, trag.

I would argue that Friends is way better than either of those other two you mentioned. And it was far more interesting and progressive then those shows pretend to be now. But I've only seen a few episodes of 2BG. Maybe I'm wrong on that one.

2BG is about as funny as Beasts of No Nation. Friends, while hardly revolutionary, was relatable for millions and was often funny. But, and I will accept the hate here, Scrubs is the benchmark sitcom for me.

I like Scrubs a lot, too. Still haven't seen the whole thing but I like what I have seen.

Just don't watch the last season, whatever you do.

Can we weigh in on Modern Family, too? I feel like that's more Scrubs caliber than Friends.

Modern Family got stale really fast for me. Same formula for every episode

Family full of good people though. Gotta love that, right?

Friends is funnier than Scrubs. No question about it. Modern Family is good for a laugh, but tedious to watch too much of. Curb Your Enthusiasm, now there is a great comedy.
