Atticus Finch: that scene when he shoots the rabid dog brings me to tears every time. His acceptance of the responsibility is what got me as a kid, and stuck with me for years.
Cool Hand Luke: the hard-boiled egg scene. I love that he takes on the challenge simply to prove a point to the other guys. Will Hunting's "I take the pipe, because fuck him" speech is similar. Ditto the Stamper family from Sometimes A Great Notion.
Llewelyn Moss, No Country For Old Men: His grit and determination to make something out of an opportunity, while not putting his loved ones in harm's way, is awesome (despite the ending).
I think I really like male protagonists who exhibit strong emotional independence.

I think it's more that I identify with him rather than see him as a role model. He's a pessimist, but also an idealist, and he can also have a lot of fun despite the absurdity of life. When he has his head out the window of the cop car, I get that sense of freedom. He's a hypocrite, too. He says he doesn't have a plan or that he doesn't care, but he most definitely has a plan, and desperately wants the world to see things his way. To wake up. So he's not just some anarchist, though he may wish he was. Despite my own attempts to detach myself from the mass of utter stupidity that is humanity, I still find myself trying to communicate with it.
