I've only seen the Cukor one, with Ingrid Bergman. It's the more famous of the two. I also thought it was great, with an all-time great villain

Movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s here, but felt lile a good thread for it. I would also mention High Sierra, The Roaring Twenties, The Harder They Fall, The Petrified Forest, Dark Passage, and The Desperate Hours.
