Plus one on all of these.
When done well, horror (in a very broad sense) is perhaps my favourite genre of film. That said, I'm generally not particularly interested in overtly gory or graphically violent films, I find them pretty repulsive.
Some other favourites:
The Wicker Man Village of the Damned The Stepford Wives
I'm crazy about Argento's films from the 70s: Suspiria (see my avatar), Deep Red, Inferno, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

I've been meaning to see this for years. I love Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant, Repulsion, etc., so I'm not sure why it's taken me so long.

Alien was a good one I forgot about. Love Tremors. Probably shouldn't admit this but if I am in the right mood the T-Rex in Jurassic Park scares me pretty good.

The glass of water bit is just tremendous film-making.

Let The Right One In The Shining Evil Dead 2 Dawn of The Dead 28 Days Later Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Rosemary's Baby The Birds Videodrome El Orfanato
This is assuming Pan's Labyrinth doesn't count as horror.

28 Days later - just fell off my top 10. Good pick!

I tend to go for ghost stories over slashers, torture porn and gross stuff. Half of these are more fun than scary but that's my kind of spooky movies. I really love the Universal Monsters but rather than list all those I just went with The Monster Squad.
Well I was really excited to show my oldest Monster Squad but I had to turn it off five minutes in. Every other word was fag0t and it was spoken with an incredible amount of venom. I don't know it made me feel uncomfortable. It all went over my head back in the day. Well I guess it was normal back then. I'm probably being too PC but it's not a word or the attitude associated with that word in the movie that I want him picking up on. Bummer. I'm gonna try Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein instead.

Watched a TON of horror as a kid -- have seen pretty much everything mentioned in this thread. Then the kidnapping/assault/attempted murder of someone very close to me ten years ago turned me off of torture porn horror altogether. I can only enjoy stuff now that is funny, over-the-top in its ridiculousness, or more atmospheric rather than explicit:
Psycho Zodiac Beetlejuice 28 days later The Shining Alien Ghostbusters Cabin in the Woods Silence of the Lambs Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original -- this goes against my disclaimer above, but it gets a slot because it terrified me more than any other horror movie I've ever seen.)

I disagree completely. Just because they're not slasher films doesn't mean they're not scary -- they have ghosts, killers, monsters, and lots of jump scares. Even Ghostbusters used to alternately make laugh/make me scared when I was a little kid. It may play as straight comedy to me now, but it was different when I was a young'un, so it goes on my list.

The opening scene with thee librarian gave me nightmares as a child.
