Have you seen Southland Tales? Why did I never know about this movie?
LOVE Southland Tales.
I prefer Donnie Darko, though I don't expend you to agree on that. Either way, Southland Tales is excellent.
Any opinions on The Box?
The worst of the three. But I still enjoyed well enough for what it is. It's uneven. A better idea maybe than execution but it's not a bad movie by any stretch. There's stuff to like, for sure, but it's a bit of a chore and not as gripping or tense as it should be. It's the only on of Kelly's films that I've seen just once, so my memory is fuzzy. I recall Diaz being just fucking terrible but all of the smaller players being great (Langella, Rebhorn, Holmes).

Hmm. I have been skipping The Box in my queue for a while now, perhaps I can let it go.

hi lv...i came across this and was wondering if you still felt this way?
Nope, I feel the opposite now.
do you like gladiator at all? i haven't seen either in at least ten years, and i'm wondering how i would react to them now
I do like it, though I liked it a lot more when I was younger. I think the action setpieces hold up very well, and it has some great performances from a great cast, but a lot of it feels...lightweight? It's a little silly.
I do think the contrast between the theatrical and extended cuts is interesting, though. The former is pretty lean, and plays like a revenge-fueled action movie. The latter is almost a political thriller, full of backdoor machinations and talky tangents. I'm not sure if one or the other is better; they're just very different.
I loved Braveheart when I watched it semi-recently. I thought it had aged much better than Gladiator. I love Mel.
