I don't even like that movie, and I really enjoy movies about Mars.

It is such a great movie, though.

I'm glad the two of you agree. :)

I always go kinda crazy during the Barnes & Noble Criterion sales. This time, I think my final haul is going to be:

Blowup
La notte
Roma
Night and the City
The Seventh Seal
Stalker
Ghost World
L'eclisse
L'argent

I like looking at the movies, but I dont really see the point of buying discs anymore. The only way I can see that being worth the cash is if I get wind that one of my favorite movies is about to go out of print, and it's future availability is murky.

Why isn't it worth it? If I like the movie and plan on watching it in the future, a disc is still going to be the best way to watch it for a long time.

Ha ha Mission to Mars is one of the worst movies ever made. It fails in every single aspect of filmmaking.

It's one of the most beautifully directed (and scored) movies I've ever seen. And thematically it hits a very deep personal nerve for me.

The score is horrendous, like every thing else in the movie!

Video compression is getting better and better. It's just a matter of time before we're all just streaming 4K movies.

This already exists. Compression artifacting still means it isn't as good as discs, though.

That I get. I wish weren't so materialistic.

New addition. I reworked my top 50 a couple months ago.

I posted a list of my top 100 movies in some thread a while back. It was an alphabetical list. I have no idea if I could actually whittle it down to 25 and then rank them. That would be super difficult.

EDIT: this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2098

That's what I meant by "better and better."

Artifacts will soon be a thing of the past.

Okay... I think I was able to figure out my top 25. Something like this:

1. Mulholland Drive
2. Fight Club
3. Do The Right Thing
4. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
5. Vertigo
6. The Shining
7. Barton Fink
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey
9. The Godfather
10. Memento
11. Upstream Color
12. Eyes Wide Shut
13. Midnight in Paris
14. Amelie
15. Donnie Darko
16. The Hudsucke Proxy
17. Blue Valentine
18. Annie Hall
19. Fargo
20. Broken Embraces (Los abrazos rotos)
21. Lost Highway
22. The Butcher Boy (1997)
23. The Graduate
24. Dancer in the Dark
25. Rear Window

So, yeah. I guess Shawshank isn't in my top 25.

Stellar list Joey. I haven't seen three of them, and Dancer In the Dark was too depressing for me to value very highly, but the other 21 are some of my most favorite films of all time.

Has there been a stellar fictitious film about food besides Ratatouille? Chef, Chocolat, and Spanglish are all pretty dull. The Trip movies are ok, but they're more of a spoof of the culture. The Milagro Beanfield War is pretty great, but that's sort of a stretch.

Ratatouille is not a stellar movie.
