I absolutely love Will Patton's voice. You know the guy:

I could listen to him all day maybe

This day-of-release simultaneous HBO Max streaming thing has been a bad plan so far for Warners, right?

Is there anyway to know how much they're making on streaming?

I dunno, but it's not only harming the movies' box office returns, I think it's also hurting their "cultural standing." Probably a bad way to phrase it but I mean like their overall cultural penetration. Their release feels much more fleeting, less important. VENOM 2 felt like a bigger deal than The Suicide Squad (even though there are obviously other factors at play there, like confusion about whether TSS was a reboot or a sequel or a Snyder-like director's cut or what)

Yeah I think getting that big opening week gross is still important.

Dune is being released a day early on HBO Max and I think that's going to kill its franchise hopes

Eh. I think that reading makes sense if you’re only looking at the film/cineplex aspect, but considering the pending merger with Discovery includes a ton of channels that are rooted in cable TV, and it looks like a pretty smart play for dominant market share of content whenever the post-cable landscape solidifies.

Yeah, AT&T is calling the shots and their main interest is in being the next Netflix. Don't know how that's going to work out in the long run

From wiki, the merger will nest under one corporate umbrella:

HBO
Discovery
Food Network
HGTV
TLC
Animal Planet
Travel Channel
Oprah Winfrey channel
Science Channel
Bravo

Then consider that those channels all act an sub-umbrellas for a host of other channels (international divisions, stuff like Cinemax, CNN, Adult Swim, TBS, TNT, Turner Classic), etc, plus the DC stuff, and you’ve a juggernaut that can go head to head with Disney for the foreseeable future.

I think that bemoaning the loss of the traditional theatrical release window is a bit like bemoaning the loss of the CD to the mp3. People want to graze on their content these days, sampling whatever they want when they want. Box office losses for Dune or whatever are pretty meaningless in the grand corporate scheme of things.

That line-up of HBO and a bunch of crappy cable channels can't really go head to head against Disney

I disagree, but would be interested to hear your case

Disney owns more valuable stuff

But what does it mean for art?

Maybe killing the blockbuster is a good thing.

On the other hand, maybe reducing film to "content" is a disaster...

I will think on this.

I think a more expedited theatrical-to-streaming window is the happy medium here, where home streaming is the replacement not of the theatrical distribution model, but of home media (sorry LV if you're reading this). I don't see any benefit for the day-of streaming model except set up theaters (and franchises) for failure

Yeah I don't really see it, WB is certainly big but it can't measure up to the mouse in terms of valuable IP

I agree this is the better question…

I think we’re in a transitional phase, where big budget pics aren’t greenlit unless the suits see long term IP with massive foreign bank to be made…

But as technology and distribution evolve, it’ll pass. And just consider that the Best Picture last year was a foreign morality drama about class warfare.

I feel like the film industry right now is where music was in the early 2000s: Incredibly segmented and formulaic. In another 10-20 years, there’ll be a wealth of amazing stories being told from a diverse variety of voices.
