Disappointment: The Northman (I liked it and it will still be somewhere on my best of list, but I was expecting it to be at the top)
Overrated: Nope (but I want to give it another shot)

Least favorite performance: Tom Hanks in Elvis
Best cinematography: Pearl
Best original score: Babylon (haven't seen it yet, but the score has been on regular rotation)

I felt similarly about Nope and The Northman, but the latter is the one I feel a stronger pull to watch again.

I loved every bit of The Northman but Nope just struck me as so tedious

FWIW I also understand all the criticism about The Northman. I think maybe reading it before watching the movie inoculated me from the complaints and I got to enjoy it as just a fucked up fairy tale

I need to watch it again. I feel like the individual parts worked, but it didn't add up to a lot.

I'm looking forward to a rewatch sometime this year.

I was mostly bored with The Northman, but I wasn’t expecting otherwise. I did liked the scene with Kidman though.

I did have high expectations, and loved the beginning, but the second half was underwhelming.

I liked the Northman quite a bit but it didn't meet my admittedly wildly high expectations. Oh well.

Listened to Rosie Perez on WTF. Damn, what a crazy story. I hope her career resurgence continues.

Thoughts?

Most years since 2012 the top movies are Marvel things. In 2022 it was Avatar, Top Gun, and Jurassic World.

Of course, Marvel's Phase 4 feeling kind of aimless and scattershot probably helps

I've been thinking along similar lines. Phase 4 has been a bummer, the DCEU essentially imploded, the X-Men are dead, the Sony Spider-Verse isn't taking off; the quality just isn't there.

The hey-day of film noir was about twenty years. The hey-day of American westerns was about the same, I suppose. These things have a shelf life. The old stars age out and the new stars just kind of feel like they're doing impressions of the originals. It doesn't have the same charm or vitality. Every natural story has been told, and there's only so many times you can tell that story again and again.

They still make westerns and sword and sandal epics from time to time, they'll still make superhero movies. Especially because of all the hundreds of billions invested. But, yeah, I think the superhero movie era peaked probably in that year between Infinity War and Endgame. It's downhill from here.
