I'll never understand the love for The Man Who Wasn't There. It's such a vague story about a vague man (hence the title I suppose). Beautifully shot and performed, but the lack of any real staying power or impactful narrative arch places it really low on my Coen list.

Who are some of your favorite lesser Coen characters? The side characters, the co-stars, the people with just a few lines...Many of them are quite brilliant.

Gus Pertch (Cedric the Entertainer), Intolerable Cruelty
"If you want an ass nailin', you call me."

Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), True Grit
I admit I didn't love this guy until I heard Brolin talk about how he crafted that character with the Coens, now I think he's brilliant.

Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson), O Brother Where Art Though
I know he's on the poster, but obviously he was sort of second tier next to Clooney and Turturro. But I think he steals every scene he's in.

Brother Shamus (Jon Polito), The Big Lebowski
This guy shows up and somehow makes an already hysterical film even funnier.

Richard Jenkins, Burn After Reading
The way he delivers "We just don't give out that sort of information at Hardbodies," like he's a knight in shining armor, breaks my heart.

Julian Marty (Dan Hedaya), Blood Simple
The only time Dan Hedaya has delivered a knockout performance? I can't think of another one.

??? (Stephen Root), No Country For Old Men
Loved his take on the scummy Texas businessman who hires Woody Harrelson to track down Anton Chigurgh. Great casting, because his performance and lines paint him as an unscrupulous SOB, but I can't help but smile a little given all the other times that Root has made me laugh.

to clarify this thread is about ranking the brothers themselves - not their works

It is a little low, I know. I noticed that when I added Buster Scruggs.

Right now, at this moment in time, my top 5 would be:

Fargo
Lebowski
Raising Arizona
No Country for Old Men
O Brother Where Art Thou?

Many I haven't seen still though.
