TV: The Strain (FX) (Del Toro)

Tue April 29, 2014 12:36 am

Teaser

http://youtu.be/bvnsZcq3Nto

A plane lands at John F. Kennedy International Airport with the lights off and doors sealed. Epidemiologist Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll) and his team are sent to investigate. On board they find two hundred corpses and four survivors. The situation deteriorates when the bodies begin disappearing from morgues. Goodweather and a small group of helpers find themselves battling to protect not only their own loved ones, but the entire city, from an ancient threat to humanity.

Starring Corey Stoll (House of Cards) and David Bradley (Game of Thrones). I read the 3 books and I think this can be a fantastic show. This could become FX's walking dead.

* I can't get the damn trailer to post, sorry!*

Yeah I'm looking forward to this. And FX has another show coming out set in the Middle East. With the Bridge coming back they could have a huge summer.

But it is a vampire epidemic, so it has to be cool, right?

Really? I didn't know that. I don't know much about it I just kind of inferred it was a global disease show by the commercials I fast forward through when watching Louie.

Anything "vampires" pretty instantly turns me off and I was unimpressed with Pacific Rim, so if this turns out well, I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Holy shit, that was easily one of the best pilots I've ever seen. I am totally on board for this show.

Don't worry, they're rerunning it like every night. I'm pretty sure it's on again tonight, actually.

For those interested, del Toro did a great Reddit AMA the other day in which he discussed The Strain, Crimson Peak, At the Mountains of Madness, Hellboy 3, Ron Perlman, food, and lots of other stuff.

Hmm, I dunno:

Spoiler: show
Clunky dialogue.
"Troubled genius" lead (named Ephraim Goodweather?!) and a bunch of other clichés.
Oversaturated blue/orange.
The medical people sure have a thing against wearing biohazard clothing when, for example, examining infected dead bodies or a big ol' box of soil from the infected plane.
I feel like the early monster reveal was a poor choice: slow build to a climax would've been better.
That rockstar guy, though.
For a horror, not many scary bits.

BUT:

David Bradley seems badass.
Sean Astin! I always get so happy when I see that dude.
Morbid and conclusion-leaping air controller guy was pretty hilarious.
Some great gory effects.
Way more fun than The Walking Dead (though that's not difficult).
Could be an enjoyable, pulpy bit of fun.

Trust me Ab, there is more to the monster to come and the rockstar guy should be very interesting.

Well, rockstar guy didn't have much to say, and he WAS supposed to be a douche, so I guess I can give the actor the benefit of the doubt. With the monster, I was referring more to the structure of the episode -
Spoiler: show
I think having it burst out of the cargo hold was less effective than it would've been to cut away just before. Or even better - cut out that scene altogether and open with creepy, quiet plane or (sigh) Eph getting a call.

I agree with your take on the cinematic choice on the reveal.

I loved this pilot, but the wife did not. I tried to tell her it would be the next True Blood but she didn't buy it. I hope I can find time to watch it without her if I can't get her to come around...
