CONAN THE BARBARIAN RETURNS TO MARVEL AFTER 18 YEAR ABSENCE

Conan the Barbarian is finally returning to the Marvel Universe. Today Marvel revealed they've reached a new agreement with Conan Properties International to take over the franchise beginning in January 2019.

Image

Marvel previously held the Conan license between 1970 and 2000, publishing hundreds of stories featuring the character across titles like Conan the Barbarian and The Savage Sword of Conan. Dark Horse Comics currently holds the license, but it appears that 2018 will mark the end of the line for their Conan saga.

Marvel has yet to announce any specific books or creative teams involved. Nor is it clear whether these new Conan comics will reboot the franchise from scratch or continue where either the classic Marvel comics or Dark Horse's stories left off.

Marvel did, however, reveal a pair of teaser images drawn by Esad Ribic and Mike Deodato, Jr. Interestingly, if Deodato's teaser is to be taken at face value, we may be seeing a crossover between Conan and the Avengers.

“From Barry Windsor-Smith to John Buscema to Neal Adams, a legendary lineup of amazing artists brought Conan to life in the pages of Marvel comics,” Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski said in Marvel's press release. “It’s a legacy we’re now going to live up to with the talent we have lined up for the Cimmerian barbarian’s homecoming in early 2019. We’re excited!”

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Dark Horse as taken pretty great care of the character. That said if they get Jason Aaron to write it that would be a home run.

Really? Is such a classic. Always loved it but never had it. The movie is based in this, but the comic is way more fun and violent and incorrect.

I hope not.

I really can’t see them continuing it without Bendis. Unless they do it just to piss him off.

I guess Bendis confirmed JJ will carry on without him with a new creative team.

Ugh....DC is giving all the Superman books to Bendis this summer. Taking Tomasi off Superman is a disaster.

DC is giving Bendis the Byrne Superman treatment. Man of Steel mini, followed by new number 1 and Action Comics takes over old numbering of Superman title.

I'm not a huge Bendis fan anymore, but I'll check out the mini and see who's doing the art on the ongoing titles.

I found this guy's video very useful.

He also has a great list of recommendations for comics beginners.

His picks make pretty good sense. Though I would have picked Harrow County for Horror and Black Science or Low for Sci-Fi.

B's video inspired me to post this. I want to start diving into some comics again, but I have no idea what's out there. Things I've read in the past and enjoyed: Byrne Marvel stuff, Dark Phoenix saga, Bone, The Invisibles, The Watchmen, Persepolis, Love and Rockets & The Spirit.

I'm looking for something slightly surreal and gritty, with a focus on crime fighting or detective stories. Kind of like The Spirit meets The Invisibles. Does that exist?
