1. Good bad and ugly. Its perfect, and better than Once Upon a Time, which I found a little indulgent.
2. Unforgiven.
3. Fistful of dollars.
4. Hmm... does Ravenous count?
5. Open Range. Underrated.

Rango is pretty great.

Never seen Dead Man or Wild Bunch. I should fix that. What I have seen of the Searchers I thought was pretty bad. Not a john Wayne fan.

Would 3:10 To Yuma qualify in this?

I love westerns. It's hard coming up with a top 5. There are so many options. The Searchers is number one I think. I really loved weird westerns like White Buffalo growing up but it would be hard to justify them in a top 5 list.

I love The Proposition. Some people may not count it as a Western though.

Because it's not actually set in the American West? What else would it be? It's got all the themes and landscapes.

Oh I agree. And yes some dispute it for those very reasons.

Then I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Seven Samurai (although you mentioned Magnificent Seven). It's pretty much a western other than it not being set in the American West, and it's a fantastic movie.

I decided I should probably bump the oldest thread on the board. Seems like the right thing to do.

1. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
2. Unforgiven
3. Man of the West
4. McCabe & Mrs. Miller
5. Lonely are the Brave

Hmmm, no particular order

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
Unforgiven
Tombstone
Blazing Saddles
Wild Bunch/Once Upon a Time in the West (I'd have to rewatch to make a final decision)

I'm a big fan of westerns. True Grit, 3:10 to Yuma, Django Unchained and Rango are all more modern films that I really enjoyed.

Has anyone ever seen the 70mm print of The Big Trail (1930)? It's one of the most amazingly shot films I've ever seen. I only saw that print once in the 90s on AMC back when all that channel ever showed was old westerns with no commercials. I miss that. It was on again a few months back on TCM but it must have been the 35mm version cause it didn't look the same. I just remember the redwood trees looking so huge and detailed it really was something.
