I love Event Horizon so much. Went to see it back then in a theatre. I was so fucking stoked.

I also saw it in the theater. And I fell asleep. It frustratingly dull and incompetent (not in cinematic style; that was just cheap but in thematic content and faux intellectualism).

To be fair to the film, I watched it again when it came out on video. I did not fall asleep again but I sure do wish I had. I've somehow seen that goddamn movie four times. I hate it so much.

Wait for real? You also mentioned him being bad in that Jurassic Park scene so I just assumed.

What do you mean by "faux intellectualism?"

yeah, faux intellectualism? The movie never tries to disguise as something thats not.

Yeah, I like Sam Neill a lot. He can be uneven at times and I think when he whiffs a scene its especially irritating to me because I know he can nail most scenes.

I feel like that movie is trying to come off as this super deep exploration when it's all pretty service stuff. There are no new ideas or new angles on old ideas. Perhaps that's my own bias. Maybe the movie isn't trying to be more than it is but it has always come across to me like it thinks it's really smart.

I don't see it as a super deep exploration of anything. It's definitely a riff on familiar topics, but I think it finds plenty of ways to distinguish itself. There's something really human about searching for answers to a mystery in space and finding Gothic Hell of the most primal, visceral, primitive, old-fashioned kind.

Yeah, that's fair. It just always came off as pretentious to me. The execution is off. For me, at least. Obviously, it has a following. People really respond to it, so it's doing something right. It's just lost on me.

Joey, literally nothing happened in three and a half hours of Contact. And Foster was the worst part of it. At least seeing mconahay as a priest was hilarious

We all know that I'm not the world's biggest Zemeckis fan... but he's goddamn Kubrick compared to Paul W.S. Anderson.
