Rough Night. I had hoped that Ruddo's review of it was wrong. It wasn't :(

Whoa, I fucking loved Death Note. I've always like Adam Wingard, but this is the first time he's really fulfilled his potential as a filmmaker. Can't wait to see what he does with Kong vs. Godzilla.

American Honey, an indie from last year that I had heard mixed to warm things about. Over two and a half hours but a on the road, coming of age story. An eighteen year from the poor side of the tracks takes off with a group of young adults in a similar situation. The dichotomy of people living well and barely scrapping by stand out and how for the cycle for both tends to repeat. It's fairly predictable but doesn't always go as you expect it to. Mostly an unknown cast and the lead (Sasha Gray) is a natural.
I liked it, doubt I would ever see it again though. Above average mix of music selection too if that matter.

The Dark Tower was HORRIBLE. I'll admit I had fun playing "spot the King reference," but this was really a piece of crap.

Death Note.

I loved the visuals. It was very gory too and loved also the demon. The pace..not so much...and the end was weird.

Watched Colossal last night. I think I'm one of those people who laugh inappropriately because there were a couple times I was laughing and my wife and son weren't.

I was somewhat surprised at the ending, though I totally understood the idea of getting rid of the person who is trying to control you instead of trying to appease them. Maybe that's an idea that could gain some traction in the real world, that would be awesome.

same. I couldn't figure out who Joel was to anyone else....brother? Friend? Random patron because they needed three people?

Ingrid Goes West was fun. 100% zeitgeist. While I won't say it's as good as Fight Club, I think there are obvious overlaps. Specifically, in terms of themes and ideas being discussed, IGW is to millennials what Fight Club is to boomers. Aubrey Plaza is really good. She stretches further than I've yet to see her stretch as an actor. But O'Shea Jackson and Elizabeth Olsen steal the show. Both of them are fantastic in this.

Logan Lucky. It was ok. Hunky McHunkerson was good. Adam Driver was great. He's also a big dude. He looks like a little nerd in Star Wars.

It was merely acceptable

I watched the trailer for this and was reminded how much I dislike Audrey Plaza

American Werewolf in London for the first time.
It came out in '81 and is famous for it's effects and makeup. It had a reputation for being bloody & gory but to today's viewers it's mostly tamer than a typical Walking Dead episode. For the most part it holds up well. The big transformation scene and the creature today would be done with CGI but there is something to be said for latex and puppets. The movie itself is pretty good; 80s horror feel to the classic werewolf story with a few genuine laughs sprinkled in. The chaotic montage set in Picadilly Circus at the end is amazing.
This was the first movie to win the Oscar for Best Makeup.
