Speaking as a lover of awful movies, Jorge's reviews usually motivate me to watch.

Jorge, Argo, did either of you read the book Blonde is based on?

I have a copy, actually, but it is huge and I don't know if I'll ever actually look at it, tbh

Gotcha.

I haven't read it either. Just curious how faithful the movie is and if the book is also as brutal.

I haven't read it, but a lot of the most eyeroll-worthy lines sound like shitty dialogue from a bad book

The book is pretty well regarded though isn't it?

I don't know

Me either.

it seems a lot of people are going with that mindset before watching the movie, because it seems the movie is being pointed out as misogynistic.

it doesn't even seem that way -- it is overwhelmingly being described as misogynistic. anyway, i'd be lying if i said i wasn't disappointed to hear people whose opinions i value don't like it. but i'm still eager to see it

gonna say "I told you so," but honestly, how could that trailer suggest anything other than exploitive to you? Seemed obvious that was the angle they were taking.

any movie about monroe is necessarily going to be exploitive. the question in how and to what end does a movie exploit her persona, image, history. i doubt dominik's "angle" was misogyny

you think? I'd like to think there's a way to portray her with humanity and empathy. I, Tonya is an example of a movie that did a decent (not excellent) job of humanizing a public trainwreck.

i'm not saying the movie is or isn't misogynistic. just claiming that's not where the intention began. from the interviews i read, dominik was obsessed with recreating images of her with intense fidelity to the originals. for better and worse, that obsession can crowd out many other considerations.

Blonde, saw a review that said:

Spoiler: show
All the misery, none of the greatness

If one had the choice between say Blonde and Bullet Train - which would be the better choice?

Even if it was, that doesn't matter. There are ways to make any "angle" good, and the movie isn't bad because it is exploitative.

Top five Marilyn Monroe movies (must have serious screen time, one scene in All About Eve not sufficient):

1. Some Like It Hot
2. The Misfits
3. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
4. The Asphalt Jungle
5. The Seven Year Itch

I turned off Bullet Train after ten minutes.

This and Jorge's take on Bullet Train make me sad - I was super pumped for this thing coming out, and saw some reviews likening it to Snatch, so thought it'd be right in my wheelhouse
