Call me by your name is the most beautiful film I’ve seen all year.
I’d give that honor to Valerian. I liked Call Me by Your Name but my biggest complaint about was that it WASN’T beautiful enough - visually, that is. The movie is so flat and lifeless in that department. It betrays the material.

Nah it’s perfect. Lazy hot summer holiday in Italy. It’s gorgeous.

I loved Valerian. Must watch it again.
I mean, yeah, that’s the setting, but I don’t think it was filmed in a particularly evocative or atmospheric way. If it were, I think I might’ve loved it. It’s just a lot of static shots composed and blocked like...well, a lot of arthouse movies. It doesn’t have the visual sensuality and intimacy the material deserves.

Really? It did all of that for me. The word that keeps coming to me is it transported me. I got all that stuff you were missing and more. Fucking felt that shit man But at least you watched it. Lot of people I know won’t cos they think it’s gay front and central and that’s all. And it’s really not.
Maybe you just need to see it a few more times for it to make sense? Seems to be a theme this year
I've actually needed time, thought, and a second viewing with other PT Anderson films, as well. I hated Magnolia the first time I saw it. Then saw am interview with Anderson that tale about totally changed my understanding of the film. Watched it again and adored it.
It's possible that the same could prove true for PT.
