Certain Women

Loved by critics and rated by a lot of cinephiles, but fairly lowly rated by the public.

Watching this now.

I can see why it divides opinions. There is no comedy, a little drama, mostly every day life, no music, and is split between following three main stories, one after the other (at least so far). Nothing combining the stories yet, but the third only recently got going.

That’s it, not much more to say.

Kristen Stewart is the highlight of the film. Their story is the best as well, even if

Come on Anders. What about the overarching themes of the three stories?

In Certain Women, Reichardt follows the lives of three Midwestern soul-searchers, all strong women whose deepest desires lie just out of reach. The threads tying the stories together are the melancholic mood of the filmmaking itself and the fact that they’re all tucked away in the same small Montana town.»

In the first story, Laura feels like she can’t get through to her client. She has told him for 8 months that he has no case. She finally takes him to another lawyer (who happens to be male), and when he says the same thing, the client appears to listen. This frustrates her, and she blames it on people not listening to her as a woman. Later the client gets in a hostage situation, and she helps fix the situation, and gets him arrested (and rightly so).

But the actions in this, or her feeling about women not being listened to (which could be a very valid theme), doesn’t seem to be present in the other two stories. Indeed the last one is almost exclusively about two women, that do not get into a relationship, despite one having a crush on the other.

The second story bored me a bit. The couple bickered and seem to take advantage of Rene Auberjonois.

The Girl With All The Gifts

Watching this at the moment.

Feels like a b-movie. Some good actors here, but the movie is lacking something to make ot really pop. Character build and a story/plot to really care for.

Midnight Special

«A father and son go on the run, pursued by the government and a cult drawn to the child's special powers.»

Probably the final movie of the weekend. Have higher hopes for this than the previous movie, even they have similar themes and public ratings.

After this I’ve got 40 movies left from 2016, consisting of 16 rewatches and 24 first time viewings.

What’s this life for?

Midnight Special

This will probably rank as the best movie today. Have 40 minutes left, but have to finish it tomorrow.

I didn’t

Finished it this morning. Pretty good movie. Story a bit too simple to be great, Driver underutilized, but still good.

Any further comment on this? I think I will rewatch it during this run of 2016-movies (which has a few more weeks in it). Haven't done that with nearly any other 2010s movie (that is watching the movie twice within a few days or weeks from each other).

Not because I loved it so, but perhaps because I wish I did. I feel like there might be more to it. but I wasn't really feeling it on Saturday.

I really enjoyed this one. The baller cast helped.

Absolutely a great cast.

Edgerton is one I feel like rarely gets the acclaim he deserves.
