1. I LOVED it.

2. I think that the press/promo has really missed the mark in depicting this film as being about the deaf community. Sure, that's a huge part of it. But I'd say it's even more about a continued journey into sobriety.

Spoiler: show
It's clear from the dialogue that Ruben "got sober" some years prior, but never did the work to achieve emotional sobriety. It's in that first meeting he has with the owner of the deaf house:

"How long have you been sober?"

"Five years."

"And how long have you been with Lou?"

"Five years."

So much of his character -- his constant attempts at convincing Lou they can still tour, his sneaking into the office to use the computer, his selling the RV to pay for the implants -- is rooted in his inability to accept life on its own terms. Only when he's helping with the younger kids at the deaf school does he get his first taste of humility, but it's not until the very end, when he decides to turn the implants off, that he seems to realize that his deafness maybe isn't an affliction, but rather a blessing. It's like he's wired too hot for the world, and he finally realizes that his ability to sit in total silence from the world is the only peaceful way he can calm his brain.

So much happening there from a sobriety point of view that I've not seen a single reviewer discuss.

Thanks man. You absolutely nailed it and really why I loved it so much. Ton of Depth there.

Stillness within, is the kingdom of god*

*no religious undertones whatsoever.

Absolutely fantastic.

I loved the end of the movie when he starts winding up again discussing going back on tour with lou. Witnessing Lou slowly deteriorate back to her scratching/cutting ways as he tries to convince her to hit the road again is when he finally has that "ah ha!" moment.

Spartacus. Still an entertaining movie, with some stellar acting.

Yeah I think that's an excellent read, Trag. Painting it as a deaf community movie pigeonholes it a bit (which, whatever, happens to all the big movies, Nomadland isn't just a great recession movie, Minari isn't just an immigrant movie). But I found it to be an incredibly moving portrait of a person hitting rock bottom and kind of finding a way back. The movie really asks, "what do you do when everything you've built your life on is taken from you?" The scene where Lou leaves him in the parking lot destroyed me.

Kind of the perfect movie for a guy hanging by himself who can’t decide what to watch

Bale was great. I kind of feel like Damon didn’t fit the part, though.

I thought Damon was fine! I wouldn't go to the mat for that movie but he was fine!

Haven’t seen it at home yet, but I was surprised by how much I liked it at the cinema. Enjoyed the casting as well.

Can understand the Damon comment He has something very particular about him, that makes him stand out as Matt Damon, and it’s not always easy imagining him as the person he is playing.
