Looking for some Spanish-language* films to watch with my son. I was thinking that since I bought the Trilogía de Guillermo del Toro I should start with those so I was reading the parents guide on IMDB. I know the films are violent - hello bottle - but I wanted to see what other people think because I'm a terrible judge of content.

Speaking of bottle, this one made me laugh:

*He's in a Spanish-Immersion program so he's very fluent; me not so much but that's what subtitles are for. The problem with the program is the school announced there would be no Spanish 3 class and he (and even the native speakers) would have to take Spanish 1 again. I'm just trying to find ways to have him keep the language that doesn't involve watching say The Avengers dubbed because that's just annoying.

Latin American Spanish? Or Spanish from Spain?

Latin American, I believe. Conversational Mexican, maybe? I don't recall what they call it officially but I know that there's a difference, as you say, between the languages. Sure it's "Spanish" but there's a world of difference.

I'd also argue against Amores Perros but for different reasons

You can't just add an 'o' to the word and make it Spanish. God.

Thanks for the recs, I'll go through them later.

I'd also argue against the Argentine movies in that list because Argentine Spanish is very different from most of Latin America (different verb forms)

Don't like them, or the wrong kind of Spanish? Hable Con Ella is amazing.

I don't like Almodovar, but Spanish from Spain (Castilian Spanish) is very different from Latin American Spanish. Would probably be confusing to a student

Why don't you like Almodovar?

Goodbye Christopher Robin is really charming. Domhnall Gleeson is finding his stride.

The indie Super Dark Times. I saw it on a couple Best of '17 lists; it's okay.

I watched Lady Bird last night, and loved it. Very touching overall, and great performances from everyone involved.

Tonight, it's either Coco or Darkest Hour.

Just saw Darkest Hour. Oldman and Mendelsohn are great, but even Joe Wright can't elevate this material over boilerplate awards bait. He is such a frustrating director; he must be SUFFOCATING under stale projects like this. Why is he wasting his talent?!
