Maybe try a spoiler-free review based on the three-act structure

Are there references to the extended Shrek universe

I've only watched like 40% of Shrek, so no, not really, but similar humor in some parts.

On the docket for this frigid snowy day

The Fablemans.

Very sweet. I loved the first half, everything related to his discovery of films and making them.

The high schools scenes were weird and I’m not sure about Williams acting tone.

But overall he shots everything in such an amazing way.

Yeah the first half was incredible. The adult stuff didn't work quite so well, but I adored most of the rest.

Been in my queue for a long time. What you think?

Just seen 7 minutes so far.

From what I can gather, people often either love or hate this movie. I see LV gave it one out of five stars.

The movie is a bit slow at first, as it doesn’t explain much, and still jumps months ahead for each following scene (thankfully, it never jumps back and forward). The mood and the relationship between the characters, as well as the setting, are very important.

The story then follows a well trodden path, and is about as predictable as they come. Still the three main actors do a fine job. Especially Casey Affleck shines here.

I think with the setting, and the actors they had, there was room here for something great or really special, but it doesn’t quite achieve that. It has a little bit of that The Deer Hunter feel, but none of the magic.

Still, despite my fairly critical review, and a by the book ending (they should have had the main character go John Wick instead), I ended up giving it a fairly good score. I was entertained throughout, and loved the mood of the area/movie.
