I recently ran out of things to watch and saw the Fast and Furious series was on Netflix, so decided to try it. Few mov5in, and I have to ask...do they get any better? This is some of the dumbest shit I've watched in a long time

From what I've seen so far (3 deep) is that they're cool if you like weird posturing, dick measuring contests and misogyny

I do see that Helen Mirren is in some of the later ones - surely she's gotta bring some class to this franchise

about halfway thru Poor Things. I had no idea this was basically a weird twisted porno. Weird movie. Very weird. I might like it.

Instead of watching Helen in fast and furious, might I suggest watching her in The Long Good Friday?

For all the eye-rollingly predictable stuff in Poor Things, there was one plot decision that I was surprised by:
Spoiler: show
Using actor names because I don't remember the character names.

At various points throughout the movie they show us how Willem Dafoe's life is pain. His body doesn't work how it's supposed to. He needs machines to do simple bodily tasks that we all take for granted. He is in constant, excruciating agony, and they show this to us repeatedly.

Several times they also make a point to show us that Emma Stone has learned a lot of surgical skills from Willem Dafoe, to the point where she goes see surgical students and critiques their work as "inelegant."

By the end of the movie, Willem Dafoe is succumbing to his sickness, and the broken body he's been trapped in all his life is finally about to die. At this point in the film Emma Stone has also shot her husband (actually her mother's husband, and I think he accidentally shot himself, but whatever) and brought his dying body to Willem Dafoe's house. So you have two men dying at the same time: one young and healthy but comically villainous, and one old and broken but (comparatively) virtuous and kind.

I really thought at this point they were setting Emma Stone up to use her surgical skills to swap Dafoe's brain into her husband's body, finally giving him the gift of a functioning body and another shot at life. Instead, they brain-swapped him, but with a goat? That was a bit deflating

Spoiler: show
I thought this was going to happen also. But something to note: If I remember correctly, according to the movie's logic, Willem Defoe's character Godwin would not have any memory of his life in his previous body, so you're just making a new person from scratch in the evil man's body.

Do they establish that? It's been a while. I know she didn't have memories because she was an actual baby

That was my impression, but I could be wrong. I don't care. The movie was really bad. I'm looking through YouTube reviews and I can't find one person who disliked the movie. I do not understand the universal acclaim whatsoever. Maybe I'm missing something. It's annoying me.

I mean it's like, some of the imagery is really sticking with me, and I know a lot of very talented, thoughtful people put so much into this movie... I'm just baffled at how utterly boring the story is. Most of the brothel scenes felt completely unnecessary. It's like, yeah, we get it, what's next? Turns out there's nothing much next. Was I supposed to be laughing? Weirded out? Proud of her for coming of age, so to speak? I didn't feel anything.

It's a bunch of master craftsmen working at the top of their game and utilizing all their talent to create something really fucking terrible and bad.

Just fired up my new 4k of The Train. Hard to believe it's 60 years old, it looks absolutely incredible.

I know people were tired of me referencing my project of watching movies from each year chronologically, and especially in regard to rewatches. I have good news for you. I am now doing a final rewatch run for 2021-23 (I have not yet seen any 2024 movies). Only movies, tv shows and short films are not included. It's not a lot, even if I watch every single movie for a second time, the total number is 62 (2021-23 movies that I’ve watched before the start of 2024). There were so very few rewatches from 22-23, only a handful, that I decided to include them now when I've started on 2021.

After that is done, I've got lined up hundreds of movies (and a few tv shows and short films), that I've never seen before from 2021-24, and will probably finish this project by the end of the year, having seen all the big 2024 movies.
