Thief (dir. Michael Mann, 1981, Criterion Edition).
Great flick. Mann's nascent skills are a double-edged sword: The safe-cracking scenes are super visceral, and i'm actually routing for James Caan to make one last score and get out of the game because his character is so human (unlike, say, Tubbs & Crockett in Miami Vice, who are super-human but not very relatable); i loved watching the shootout at the end because it looked like a real guy getting out by the skin of his teeth. But then Mann's under-developed visual flair bites him in the ass at times; watching James Caan try to look relaxed on the beach made me uncomfortable, and some scenes were too darkly lit and bathed in blue.
Other random thoughts:
1. I need to use my PS4's blu-ray player way more often
2. After watching Caan and Tuesday Weld come together; Reynolds and Alma in Phantom Thread; and reading about all these lost souls who found love, only to be murdered in I'll Be Gone In the Dark, i'm struck by how innocent romantic relationships used to be. It's like people used to operate on this assumption of "i'm gonna die someday, so i'd better partner up with someone who seems like a decent match." Seems like people are much more picky in the modern dating scene.

The PS4 is a bad Blu-ray player tho
why's that? it's definitely better than streaming -- i'm not getting those blocky blacks we talked about -- but i don't know much more beyond that.
Its video processing is weak. Sony clearly wasn’t interested in investing in video disc playback for the PS4 (would have included UHD capabilities if they were) and put no effort into it.
Yeah, you’re not gonna see macroblocking because the Criterion BD will have good compression; the player won’t change that. But different BD players can produce very different picture quality results in terms of sharpness, detail, contrast, etc. I’ve A/B tested my PS3’s and PS4’s BD players before and the 3 produced demonstrably superior results.

It’s a real bummer because IMO Sony are BY FAR the best company out there when it comes to 4K Blu-ray transfers. The PS4 should be one of the best players out there. But alas

Anon was pretty terrible.
Clive Owen's career has been a disappointment since Children of Men.
There are diamonds in the rough and he has remained charming and compelling, but I'd agree that his career has definitely been a disappointment. I don't know how it happened, though. Did he just choose the wrong movies?
Boring until the last 25 mins, then decently spooky.
