I still enjoyed it but it's just much sappier / creepier than I remembered it
I also can't make up my mind about the film's philosophical stance, whether it's optimistic or cynical. It's either "given enough time, man can become the best version of himself and be kind and good and generous," or "given enough time, man can manipulate others into thinking he is kind and good and generous in order to gain from them and/or bask in their admiration"

I never saw time as having anything to do with it. The message I’ve always got is that living a life of good intention and good will for your fellow man leads to joy and fulfillment.
