Why don't you like Cumberbatch?
1. I have a gut instinct that he's a prick
1A. This instinct is only a little informed by his feud with Martin Freeman. And Freeman didn't come off like a peach in that situation, but it seemed like Cumberbatch was keen to kick him while he was down.
2. He's got some range, but I've never seen a performance that wowed me. So I don't totally understand his success...
3. ...Yet he seems to carry himself, or maybe just be regarded by others, like he's a mega-star
4. Basically anyone who made built their career alongside Harvey Weinstein, and then were all "Yeah down with Harvey!" when that scandal broke, is a hypocrite. I give Brad Pitt kind of a pass because of how he put his career on the line to defend his girlfriend at the time, but there sure were a lot of people who came out of that situation looking like self-interested dickheads.
Mostly it's #1 with the other stuff serving to further weight my uninformed bias.
Damn, they're really making progress on that rope! One more 25 minute chunk to go. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
I've been out of grad school too long to properly articulate this, but I'm enjoying the way this movie sets up certain expectations only to immediately subvert or deconstruct them. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but within the first 30 minutes you think you have the basic plot figured out based on the way the characters behave, but then they start adding layers. I guess that's true of most movies, but I guess I didn't expect it from a western.
I remember I was in Miami when it happened. I was posting from the balcony of my apartment overlooking the beach. And I was having an argument with Adamdude.

So your argument is that Cumberbatch doesn’t get away with being a prick.
What was the feud with Freeman?

Don't question Trag's weirdsies, it never leads anywhere good
I've posted about this before, but I'm not interested in separating the art from the artist. There are ethical/consumerist implications there I'm not comfortable with, and as a former supporting role employee of the entertainment industry, I take things like on-set behavior and Hollywood gossip to heart, for better or worse.
So yeah, if someone I deem a middling actor receives a lot of acclaim, I am skeptical and a little upset about their success (Kevin Costner, Julia Roberts). If someone has a reputation for being a shit (Matthew Fox, Sylvester Stallone), and is also a middling actor, my skepticism and anger increase.
I don't lose sleep over this stuff, and I recognize that there are decent chances that these people are nothing like I've made them out to be in my head. But it makes for good RM fodder, so I'm content to take a swing at Cumberbatch, and just as content to change my position if a decent case can be made that I've made a poor estimation of his skills or character.
